Created as a haven for wild animals who were displaced by the construction of the massive Udawalawe Reservoir, the Udawalawe National Park over 30,000 hectares is also an important habitat for the Sri Lankan elephant and water birds. It’s special feature being a mix of topography belonging to the wet and dry zones of Sri Lanka, with mountains and plains dominating the area. There are forests, grasslands, marshes and tributaries while other mammals such as the Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bear and Sri Lankan sloth bear inhabit the Udawalawe National Park.
